Bioonly weeks before in the back of my blue annual she wrote in black ink: "keep wearing the cool cloths. your like a sister. never change and stay in touch." laura lee never really liked using 'e's, and sometimes in the span of a four page unlined letter i had to use a special decoder ring to decipher the mismatched letters sprawling about pink paper like untamed mice.
in between letters i fabricated a dirty blond haired girl named kelsie who moved to virgina to eat raspberry pastries, write cursive and learn algebra in the library during her spare time. halfway through the eighth chapter miss laura lee wrote: "her's a map. i am moving back and this is where we will live. you and dawn and me and mel. imagin what fun!" and then furniture, meals, sometimes weekends plans.
see, miss lee never wrote again. just once halfway through my eighth grade year when she pulled out a blue sheet to say "i am sorry. i was in tenesee, but did not have time to visit."
in 1998, the year we were to be living in a cramped basement of her uncle's house taking nightly walks on flowered lined sidewalks i saw her name on the back of a bulletin that i read quickly before bringing it in from the mail and tossing it in the trash. she was painting hearts on children's faces in mexico. i sometimes wonder if she found her e's.
